The T87/50 had been very competitive winning four rounds to take the All Japan F3000 Championship while in Europe again four wins were taken together with the runner-up spot in the Championship so the new car needed to at least match this and ideally improve.

The full technical details of the T88/50 can be found in the Lola Press Release below.

The biggest changes by Designer Mark Williams from the T87/50 were a new composite monocoque which was narrower around the front suspension and cockpit, cooling was improved and the front spring/damper units were now operated by pushrods replacing the pullrods of the 1987 design.

1987 had seen the battle for victory being fought by Lola, March and Ralt (and a not very competitive Dallara) with the March 85B winning the Championship from Lola but 1988 would see a new name enter the F3000 ranks with devastating effect as F3 winners Reynard built their first F3000 design the 88D. At the end of the year Reynard had seven wins to the three of Lola and one of March giving Roberto Moreno's Bromley Motorsport Reynard the Championship ahead of Lola Motorsport's Olivier Grouillard.
