The T430 was the follow up to the relatively disappointing T400 that, while winning races, proved too complicated for teams to develop during a season therefore, for 1976, Lola introduced the T430, a much more conventional design. Initially Lola tried a Formula Two T450 fitted with a F5000 engine but in the end the monocoque was based on that of the 1975 Formula Atlantic design, the T360 which featured a very narrow chassis, although the suspension was very different with the front wishbones attached to a tubular structure built out from the tub and the twin water radiators were at the rear with a full-width nosecone fitted.

Only three cars were built with two going to the VDS team, who were now racing in the US, for Peter Gethin and Teddy Pilette and one to Carl Haas. Pilette raced his car, HU1, six times with a best finish of 3rd at Mosport Park, ironically the race was won by Alan Jones in a T332! Gethin only did three races in HU2 preferring to drive a Chevron B37 while the Haas car (HU3) was used as a spare for Brian Redman who used a T332C and it was never raced.
